Corner of North Pacific Street (now Broadway), Plainview TX in 1914 | ||||||
Pacific Street was renamed to Broadway in 1916 at the request of the
Young Men’s Business Alliance, a forerunner of the Chamber of Commerce.
With that action, Plainview erased such colorful street names as Eureka,
Pacific, Restriction, Cottage, Rosefelt, Portues and Pike and replaced
them with either numbers or, in alphabetical order, the names of trees
(east of Broadway) and major cities (west of Broadway). "Beginning at the present Pacific Street, which becomes Broadway and continuing east: Covington becomes Ash, Adams becomes Beech, Walnut becomes Cedar, Cottage becomes Date, McClelland becomes Elm, Sterling becomes Fir, Price becomes Grove, Strong becomes Hickory, Charles becomes Ivy, Ridge becomes Juniper Street." |
