Henry County enjoyed phenomenal growth during the first few
years of the twenty first century. According to the U.S.
Census Bureau estimates Henry County is the eighth fastest
growing county in America based on percent of growth between
January 2000 and July 2006 for all counties that began the
century with more than ten thousand inhabitants.
Henry County is a part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. As of
the 2000 census, the population was 119,341. The 2006 Census
Estimate placed the population at 178,033. Many scenes from
the 1977 hit Smokey and the Bandit where filmed in McDonough,
GA. It is also home to the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton,
GA.
Henry County which was founded in 1821, had already grown in
population to 119344 by the year 2000. But in the six years
that marked the beginning of the 21 Century, the county
increased the number of residents by 49.2 percent bringing the
estimated total population in July 2006 to 178,033.
The astounding growth of the last six years has made Henry
County the number 2 fastest growing county in the Peach State
of Georgia and the eighth fastest in the nation.
Although no figures are available to determine how the growth
may have affected the price of homes in the area, in the year
2000 the median cost for a home within the 323 square mile
