America
Walton County, Florida
Seat: Defuniak Springs
Walton County is the 67th fastest growing county in the US
based on rate of growth between January 2000 and July 2006 for
all counties that began the century with more than ten
thousand inhabitants, according to recent U.S. Census Bureau
estimates.
Walton County which was established in 1824, grew in
population to 40,602 by the year 2000. In the six years that
marked the beginning of the 21st Century, the county increased
the number of inhabitants by 28.7 percent bringing the
estimated total population in July 2006 to 52,270.
The outstanding growth of the last six years has made Walton
County the tenth fastest growing county in the Sunshine State
of Florida and the 67th fastest in the nation.
The median value for a home within the 1058 square mile
jurisdiction of Walton County was $96,400 in 2000 but the
Bureau had no statistics on home values for 2006. Determining
how the rapid growth may have affected the value of homes in
the area is difficult but the current auctions that follow
should give some indication.
