Deschutes County is the 60th fastest growing county in
America based on percent of growth between January 2000 and
July 2006 for all counties that began the period with more
than ten thousand residents, according to recent U.S. Census
Bureau estimates.
Deschutes County which was founded in 1916, grew in population
to 115,367 by the year 2000. In the six years that marked the
beginning of the 21st Century, the county increased the number
of residents by 29.3 percent bringing the estimated
total population in July 2006 to 149,140.
The outstanding growth of the last six years has made
Deschutes County the fastest growing county in the Beaver
State of Oregon and the 60th fastest in the nation.
It is difficult to determine how the growth may have affected
the value of homes in the area but in 2000 the median cost for
a home within the 3,018 square mile jurisdiction of Deschutes
County was $148,800.
