St. Lucie County is the 44th fastest growing county in America
based on percent of growth between January 2000 and July 2006
for all counties that began the period with more than ten thousand inhabitants, according to recent U.S. Census Bureau
estimates.
St. Lucie County which was established in 1844, grew in
population to 192,695 by the year 2000. In the six years that
marked the beginning of the 21st Century, the county increased
the number of inhabitants by 31.2 percent bringing the
estimated total population in July 2006 to 252,724.
The astounding growth of the last six years has made St. Lucie
County the fifth fastest growing county in the Sunshine State
of Florida and the 44th fastest in the nation.
It is difficult to determine how the growth may have affected
the value of homes in the area but in 2000 the median cost for
a home within the 572 square mile jurisdiction of St. Lucie
County was $86,100.
