15 Union County NC
Fifteenth Fastest Growing County In the
Nation
Union County, North Carolina
Seat: Monroe
According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates Union County is the
fifteenth fastest growing county in America based on percent
of growth between January 2000 and July 2006 for all counties
that began the century with more than ten thousand residents.
The County’s growth may be due to its diverse industrial base
- from Fuel Cells and New Age Medical Technologies to
Traditional Manufacturing in Metals and Food Processing. The
entire Charlotte Region was recognized by Fortune Magazine
as #1 in "pro-business" attitude. Being adjacent to the 2nd
largest financial center in the United States and proactively
pursuing the growth and development of high-technology
businesses, the Union County has become a significant player
in the many new growth sectors.
Union County which was established in 1842, had already grown
in population to 123,738 by the year 2000. But in the six
years that marked the beginning of the 21 Century, the county
increased the number of inhabitants by 41.6 percent
bringing the estimated total population in July 2006 to
175,272.
The astounding growth of the last six years has made Union
County the number 1 fastest growing county in the Old North
State of North Carolina and the fifteenth fastest in the
nation.
Although no figures are available to determine how the growth
may have affected the price of homes in the area, in the year
2000 the median cost for a home within the 637 square mile
jurisdiction was $128,500.
