12 Lincoln County SD
Twelfth Fastest Growing County In the Nation
Lincoln County, South Dakota
Seat: Canton
Lincoln County enjoyed astounding growth during the first few
years of the twenty first century. According to U.S. Census
Bureau estimates Lincoln County is the twelfth fastest growing
county in America based on percent of growth between January
2000 and July 2006 for all counties that began the century
with more than ten thousand residents.
Lincoln County’s phenomenal growth during the first few years
of the 21st Century has been attributed to the exponential
growth of the entire Sioux Falls metropolitan area and the
city's southern expansion into the county and subsequent
growth of her suburbs. The county is divided into sixteen
townships: Brooklyn, Canton, Dayton, Delapre, Delaware,
Eden, Grant, Fairview, Highland, La Valley, Lincoln, Lynn,
Norway, Perry, Pleasant, Springdale.
Lincoln County which was founded in 1867, had already grown in
population to 24,147 by the year 2000. But in the six years
that marked the beginning of the 21 Century, the county
increased the number of inhabitants by 45.9 percent
bringing the estimated total population in July 2006 to
35,239.
The astounding growth of the last six years has made Lincoln
County the fastest growing county in the Mount
Rushmore State of South Dakota and the twelfth fastest in the
nation.
Although no figures are available to determine how the growth
may have affected the price of homes in the area, in the year
2000 the median cost for a home within the 578 square mile
jurisdiction was $104,100.
