Fastest Growing County in America
Flagler County, Florida
Seat: Bunnell
Flagler County enjoyed phenomenal growth during the first few
years of the twenty first century. According to the U.S.
Census Bureau estimates Flagler County is the fastest growing county in America based on percent of growth between
January 2000 and July 2006 for all counties that began the
century with more than ten thousand residents.
But for a short time in 1998 there may not have been anyone at
home. When two brush fires threatened to become one huge brush
in Flagler County that year a mandatory evacuation was ordered
for the entire county. This was the first, and so far the
only, time a whole county was evacuated in Florida.
Flagler County which was founded in 1917 , had already grown
in population to 49835 by the year 2000. But in the six years
that marked the beginning of the 21 Century, the county
increased the number of residents by 66.7 percent bringing the
estimated total population in July 2006 to 83084.
The population spurt of the last six years has made Flagler
County the fastest growing county in the Sunshine
State of Florida and the fastest in the nation.
Although no figures are available to determine how the growth
may have affected the price of homes in the area, in the year
2000 the median cost for a home within the 485 square mile
jurisdiction was $116,200.
