Born in Motley County, Texas June 8, 1902, Tilson was a football
player and coach from 1922 to 1940. Better known as Tex
Tilson,
he was captain of the 1924
Washington & Lee Generals and played as a tackle
from 1922 to 1925. Later as head coach of the Generals, he led the
Generals to the 1934 Southern Conference
championship.
Tilson never forgot his ranching heritage. In 1932
he bought a 426 acre farm in the Shenandoah Valley of
Virginia. He quickly introduced cattle to the farm and
hailing back to his childhood in West Texas
renamed the Broadview Farm to Broadview
Ranch. His descendants still own and operate the
ranch and raise high quality grass fed beef.
In 1947 he founded Rockbridge Hunt at his
farm, Broadview Ranch. Rockbridge was registered
with the Masters of Foxhounds Association in
1960 and recognized in 1962.
Tilson died in
March 3, 1984 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
