Ombudsman calls for study on identity theft
through state websites DES MOINES, Iowa State Ombudsman Bill Angrick is worried that documents containing personal information could be scanned and posted on an agency Web sites, making citizens vulnerable to identity theft. Angrick has served as Citizens’ Aide/Ombudsman for the State of Iowa, since 1978. He was appointed by the Legislative Council of The Iowa General Assembly to investigate citizens’ complaints about Iowa state and local government. He wants lawmakers to create a privacy commission to investigate identity theft from government sources. He says a commission is necessary to review whether government agencies need private information, whether they make documents public without blacking out sensitive information and if they properly get rid of unneeded documents.
