H. Jeff Kimble was born April 23, 1949 in Floydada
Texas and graduated from FHS in 1967 where he was a member of the
football and basketball teams and the band. He was president of the
National Honor Society and graduated as Honor Boy.
Jeff graduated Summa Cum Laude from Abilene Christian University in 1971
with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics. While he was at ACU he
was captain of the basketball team and he was selected for the
Southland Scholarship Award. He earned his master's and doctoral
degrees from University of Rochester, culminating in 1979.
He spent two years as a scientist for the General Motors Research
Laboratory until 1979 when he joined the faculty at the University
of Texas at Austin. He moved to the California Institute of
Technology in 1989. He is the William L. Valentine Professor and
Professor of Physics at Caltech where his research is in quantum
optics and is noted for groundbreaking experiments in physics
including one of the first demonstrations of teleportation of a
quantum state.
A member of the National Academy of Sciences, Kimble holds five
patents and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1998.
