House Majority Illegally Changes Vote in Favor of Illegals

Congressman Ted Poe (TX-02

ILLEGAL VOTE BENEFITS ILLEGALS

Washington, Aug 3 - 2007

Congressman Ted Poe (TX-02) released the following statement in response to the majority’s violation of House rules last night on a vote that would have prevented illegal immigrants from collecting federal benefits:

“Last night was reminiscent of the 1972 Olympics when officials cheated the United States out of a victory over the Soviet Union. In the same sore loser fashion, the Democrat leadership cheated Americans out of a victory last night when they ran roughshod over the US House of Representatives. Just as Olympic officials did in Munich to help the losing Soviets, the House leadership put three seconds back on the clock to get the outcome they wanted – federal benefits for illegals.

“This was not about toting the party line and that was clearly reflective of the bipartisan support in the original vote tally. Unfortunately, some Members of Congress are determined to undermine our immigration laws and deliberately violated House rules with an illegal vote to do so.

“The American people will not and have not ever stood for this kind of behavior. Team USA to this day has refused to accept the outcome of their trumped up defeat and the silver medals remain unclaimed in Switzerland. Once again, Americans were not defeated, they were cheated.”

During consideration of the Agriculture Appropriations Bill, the Republicans offered a motion to prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining federal housing benefits. The final vote tally was 215-213 when the vote was gaveled to a close. The Speaker reopened the vote to ensure that the motion was then defeated by a vote of 212-216. In clear violation of House rules, the Republicans walked out of the House in protest.
