Allegations of Official Misconduct
Former Court Clerk Indicted for Theft
of Drug Evidence
Nov-03-07
Following a 17-month investigation by the State
Bureau of Investigation, former court clerk Lisa Austin Brickhouse has
been indicted for allegedly stealing drugs from the Dare County North
Carolina evidence vault.
According to the indictment, Brickhouse of Kill
Devil Hills North Carolina allegedly stole cocaine that was being held
in evidence for three different cases. The thefts are indicated as
occurring between August 25, 2004 and March 6, 2006, however the
discovery of the missing drugs was not reported until May 2006.
In May 2006, the State Bureau of Investigation was
asked to investigate the disappearance of the drugs. A Dare County Grand
Jury handed down the indictments last month after hearing evidence
presented by the bureau.
In addition to the theft charges, Brickhouse is
also accused of obstruction of justice based on allegations that after
stealing the cocaine from the Dare County Clerk of Superior Court's
evidence vault, she lied to court officials about its whereabouts.
And in the third count, the Grand Jury found that
she allegedly possessed more than 28 — but less than 200 — grams of
cocaine which is a controlled substance included in Schedule II of the
North Carolina Controlled Substances Act.
