Elish Roberts

Little is known about Elish Roberts. Even the exact date of his death is unknown, other than at some point he found his way to Lockney, Texas shortly after the West Texas town was founded. It is the circumstances, time and place of his death that brought him lasting notoriety. Roberts is the first person to be buried in the Lockney Cemetery. He was caught with another man's wife sometime in 1890. The resulting gunfight ended the life of Elish Roberts. His story is still studied in local schools.
