 Born in Dimmitt, Texas
July 6, 1952, Carthel
started his coaching career in 1975 under
legendary coach
L.G. Wilson
at Floydada High
School in Floydada, Texas from 1975 to 1976. After coaching for
the University of Dubuque and Boswell High
School in Texas he landed his first head coach job at
Lubbock Christian College in 1981. At the time
he was the youngest head coach in all college
football. In 1985 Carthel took over head
coaching duties at his alma mater Eastern New
Mexico and coached the Greyhounds through seven
seasons. He is also the father of
SFA head coach
Colby Carthel.
In
2019 Don Carthel joined his son Colby's staff at
Stephen F Austin State University
Lumberjacks in 2020, serving as a quality
control coach for the SFA special teams in
addition to his work as the director of high
school relations.
