Today, the 6 foot 7 inch Shooting Guard is a retired National Basketball Association player and former assistant coach for Eastern Washington University. During his career he played for Odessa Junior College, Washington State University, Houston Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers, the Atlanta Hawks and the Seattle Supersonics.

Ehlo spent the majority of his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and was originally signed when Mark Price went down with an injury. With Cleveland, he tallied 5,130 points, 2,285 assists, and 2,267 rebounds in seven seasons (19861993).

He spent the second half of his career with the Atlanta Hawks as Steve Smith's backup. Before the 199697 season, he signed with the Seattle SuperSonics, but was used sparingly and did not play during the playoffs. He was waived by the club in October that year before the start of the 199798 season.

Ehlo coached at Eastern Washington until resigning on July 11, 2013. Later that year, he underwent drug treatment owing to an addiction to prescription painkillers. Ehler was facing charges of reckless burning after sheriff's deputies found him outside his home in August 2013 next to a pile of his burning clothes. Ehlo had been involved in an altercation with his wife. Later that year, he underwent drug treatment owing to an addiction to prescription painkillers following back surgery.

In July 2019, Ehlo was hired as a color analyst on all Washington State Cougars men's basketball home games during the 2019-20 season.
