State Attorney General Investigates County Clerk
3/15/2006
Eileen Martinez, the county
clerk for Cibola County, New Mexico said she would welcome an investigation
by the state Attorney General's Office and the New Mexico State Police,
according to a report from KRQE-News 13 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Sam Thompson, the state's attorney general's spokeswoman,
confirmed the investigation, but refused to comment on the nature of the
investigation as it is on-going.
"I have done nothing wrong," said Martinez in an interview with
Albuquerque Independent. "I don't touch the money. It is handled by
others in the office."
Various alleged offenses are rumored to have occurred in Martinez's office,
including missing funds and the destruction of provisional ballots following
the 2004 presidential election. Unnamed sources who previously worked in the
county office spoke to the Albuquerque Journal and informed them
that Martinez has not always behaved ethically in her role as county clerk.
