Mortgage Fraud Skyrockets in Latest FBI Report 6/9/2006 Source of Title - Reprinted with permission
Mortgage fraud continues to be among one of the largest problems facing federal authorities. The occurrence of mortgage fraud cases increased 91.5 percent between 2003 and March 31, 2006, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The government agency credits the problem with fraudsters' use of modern technology and the appeal of skyrocketing real estate values.
"The bureau had 835 pending mortgage fraud cases with the FBI as of March 31," said Ronda Heilig, the mortgage fraud coordinator for the FBI, during a recent conference hosted by the American Bankers Association.
The FBI placed losses associated with fraud at approximately $1 billion in 2005. This statistic represents a major leap from its 2003 standing of $200 million.
