34th Fastest Growing County In America
Hays County, Texas
Seat:
San Marcos

Hays County is the 34th fastest growing county in America based on percent of growth between January 2000 and July 2006 for all counties that began the period with more than ten thousand residents, according to recent U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

Hays County which was established in 1848, had already grown in population to 97,576 by the year 2000. But in the six years that marked the beginning of the 21st Century, the county increased the number of inhabitants by 33.6 percent bringing the estimated total population in July 2006 to 130,325.

The astounding growth of the last six years has made Hays County the seventh fastest growing county in the Lone Star State of Texas and the 34th fastest in the nation.

It is difficult to determine how the growth may have affected the price of homes in the area but in 2000 the median cost for a home within the 678 square mile jurisdiction of Hays County was 129,400.
