11 Newton County GA
Eleventh Fastest Growing County In the Nation
Newton County, Georgia
Seat: Covington

According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates Newton County is the eleventh fastest growing county in America based on percent of growth between January 2000 and July 2006 for all counties that began the century with more than ten thousand inhabitants.

The county seat, Covington, has served as the location for filming of several television shows and movies, including In the Heat of the Night, the first five episodes of The Dukes of Hazzard, My Cousin Vinny, and Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. Oxford College , located in Oxford, GA was the backdrop for the opening credits for the Dukes of Hazzard. The entire town of Oxford is designated as a shrine of the United Methodist Church.

Newton County which was founded in 1821, had already grown in population to 62,001 by the year 2000. But in the six years that marked the beginning of the 21 Century, the county increased the number of inhabitants by 47.5 percent bringing the estimated total population in July 2006 to 91,451.

The astounding growth of the last six years has made Newton County the number 4 fastest growing county in the Peach State of Georgia and the eleventh fastest in the nation.

Although no figures are available to determine how the growth may have affected the price of homes in the area, in the year 2000 the median cost for a home within the 276 square mile jurisdiction was $101,300.
